CONCH PIERCING GUIDE
This piercing guide covers everything you need to know about conch piercings including recommended jewellery types, size guides, materials, our most frequently asked helix piercing questions, and styling inspiration.

A conch piercing is a cartilage piercing located in the centre of the ear, known as the conch due to its shell-like shape. It’s a popular next step after helix or lobe piercings and is suitable for a wide range of jewellery styles once healed.
Conch piercings are highly versatile and can be worn with either studs or hoops, depending on placement and personal preference. Jewellery choice will also depend on whether the piercing is positioned in the inner or outer conch.
Conch Piercing Placement
Inner conch
Pierced through the flat centre area of the ear. This placement is most commonly worn with flat-back studs, labrets or decorative fronts that sit flush against the ear.
Outer conch
Positioned closer to the outer edge of the ear cartilage. This placement allows for cartilage hoops that wrap around the ear and is often chosen for a bolder look.
FAQ'S
most asked conch piercing questions
Pain levels vary, but conch piercings are generally considered moderate due to the thickness of the cartilage. The piercing itself is quick, with pressure rather than sharp pain being most commonly reported.
Average healing time: 6–12 months
Initial swelling and tenderness are normal during the first few weeks. Downsizing jewellery is recommended once swelling reduces.
Only change your jewellery once your piercing is fully healed. Changing too early can cause irritation, swelling and delayed healing. Consult your piercer if you are unsure.
Helix piercings can be tricky to change, especially with flat-back studs. Using a piercing insertion tool or stud grabber can help guide the post through the piercing and securely attach the front without dropping it. These tools make jewellery changes quicker, easier and more hygienic.
Gauge: 1.2mm (standard for cartilage piercings)
Post length: Varies depending on ear thickness and swelling usually 6-8mm
Hoop diameter: Typically 10mm once healed, depending on anatomy and fit preference. At Cartilage Cartel we stock a range of conch piercing hoops from 6-14mm. On average 12mm is most popular, 10mm for smaller ears and 14mm for a slightly looser fit.
Always consult your piercer if you are unsure.
A flat-back labret or cartilage hoop made from ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium is best.
