A tragus piercing is a cartilage piercing located on the small flap of cartilage that partially covers the ear canal.
The tragus is a popular choice because it adds subtle detail to the centre of the ear without overpowering an ear stack. Its compact placement makes it ideal for minimal jewellery and it works particularly well alongside lobe, helix and conch piercings to create a balanced look.
Tragus piercings are most commonly worn with small flat-back studs that sit flush against the ear. Once healed, some people also choose to wear small cartilage hoops, depending on anatomy and fit.
FAQ'S
most asked tragus questions
Pain levels vary, but tragus piercings are generally considered low to moderate pain. The cartilage is thicker than the lobe but smaller than many other cartilage areas. You may feel pressure during the piercing rather than sharp pain.
Average healing time: 6–12 monthsInitial swelling and tenderness are normal in the early stages. Full healing can take up to a year, even if the piercing looks healed externally
Only change your jewellery once your piercing is fully healed. Changing too early can cause irritation, swelling and delayed healing. Consult your piercer if you are unsure.
Helix piercings can be tricky to change, especially with flat-back studs. Using a piercing insertion tool or stud grabber can help guide the post through the piercing and securely attach the front without dropping it. These tools make jewellery changes quicker, easier and more hygienic.
